The ESMT is a historical site in the center of Berlin, next to the office of the German ministry of foreign affairs. It was built from 1962 to 1964 to accommodate the state council of the former German Democratic Republic. Representing the architectural modernity of its era, the building has landmark status today.
In 2002, 25 leading global companies and institutions, such as BMW, Lufthansa and Siemens, founded the ESMT with the aim of creating an international private business school focused on educating and developing entrepreneurial leaders. From 2003 to 2005, the building was then lavishly refurbished and now offers a state-of-the-art location for events. The building houses a banquet hall, three lecture theatres, teaching rooms, and a large number of seminar and study rooms.
How to get there
The ESMT is about 12 km by taxi (located at Terminal A at Gates 6–9, as well as Terminals C and E) from the Berlin Tegel Airport. From the Berlin Schönefeld Airport (taxis can found at Terminal A), it is about 20 km. The ride will take between 25 and 35 minutes, depending on the traffic, and will cost between €25 and €40 (US$28–45).
BY LOCAL PUBLIC TRANSPORT
Tegel Airport is very well integrated into Berlin’s local transport network, operated by the Berliner Verkehrsbetriebe (BVG; the city’s main public transport company). The airport is in Zone B. Bus stops are located right outside Terminals A and B. From Tegel Airport, you may take, for example, Bus TXL (direction S+U Alexanderplatz via Hauptbahnhof) to Staatsoper, which is the closest bus station to the ESMT. After a short 600 m walk, you will reach the ESMT. The ride will take you about 45 minutes and cost €2.80 (US$3.14).
Schönefeld Airport has a railway station that is also well connected to Berlin’s center and surrounding areas. The airport is located in fare zone C. The airport is just a 5-minute walk from the railway station via a covered walkway.
A one-day ticket, which is valid in all zones, costs €7.70 (US$8.64).
More information about fares and times can be found at www.bvg.de.
